Honoraria Refused Chairmen
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 19. The Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) has again declined approval of honoraria for live committee chairmen of the Auckland Regional Authority,
The authority asked Mr Lake to approve payments of between £350 and £5OO a year for the chairmen of the regional roads, regional parks, staff and internal organisation, civil defence and general functions committees. Mr Lake has already approved honoraria for the chairman of the authority (£1250), the chairman of the
drainage division (£750), transport division (£500), planning (£500) and airport committee (£350). In reply to a letter from the chairman, Mr D. M. Robinson, Mr Lake said he was unable to agree that the responsibilities of the chairman of the five committees were far and above those of many local authority committee chairmen.
Mr Lake said he agreed that there was a need to attract the best type of people into local government but this problem was faced by all local authorities.
“In view of the wide implication,” he said, “I am not prepared to single out the five committee chairmen of the authority for special treatment.”
Mr Lake said he was prepared to review the matter in a year.
