ANNUAL CUSTOM
“By this ceremony we bring to mind our colleagues who, as members of their own federations, are working alongside us to achieve the aims of a better world,” the president of the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club (Miss T. G. Eldridge) said at the club’s International Night last evening. She was introducing the annual candle-lighting ceremony through which the club remembered its links with sister federations in other parts of the world. For many years it had been the club’s custom to hold this ceremony, in which a candle was lit for the international federation and overseas federations and five associate members, she said. Miss Eldridge outlined the history of the international federation, which was formed in Geneva in 1930. International week was celebrated each year in February, as a means of fostering understanding and to link federations in a study of mutually important subjects, and to introduce the common theme chosen by the international board, she said. A message of greeting from the international federation president, Miss Helen Irwin, of lowa, United States, was read at the meeting. Other greetings, including a message from the New Zealand Federation president (Mrs Pauline Cooper), were read.
A bracket of tongs was sung by Miss A. McQuinn, accompanied by Mrs R. McQuinn.
