CANAL PLAN
Saving For Steel (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 22. A £2 million canal from the Waikato river to an arm of the Manukau harbour near Waiuku would save the proposed steel plant in the area at least £260,000 a year in transport costs for raw materials, said the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr R. C. F. Savory) today.
“It is an economic must,” said Mr Savory at an Auckland Rotary Club luncheon. Mr Savory also put forward again the proposal for a canal between the Waiternata and Manukau harbours, saying it was "perhaps not on this year, but probably next.”
He said he was giving his own opinions and not speaking on behalf of the harbour board. The canal would allow cartage of about 400,000 tons of coal from the Huntly area and 60,000 tons of limestone from the Waikato to the plant each year at an annual saving of at least £260,000, he said. Fresh water could also be pumped from the canal to serve the steel mill’s requirements at reduced cost, said Mr Savory.
