The Road Toll
Sir, —The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) repeatedly appeals to motorists to halt the appalling loss of life on the roads. He should have realised long ago that the majority of drivers who cause these losses lack responsibility. It is useless to appeal to "them. The new driving test is a good move, long overdue, but does not go far enough. The first results show the old test was entirely inadequate. Undoubtedly in many of the serious accidents alcohol is the prevailing cause, and it is disturbing to note that the recommendation of the New Zealand Safety Council, a body concerned solely with the safety of all the public, is not wholly supported by the Motor Unions, which contend that the limit of the amount of alcohol recommended by the council as the safety margin is too low. It must not be overlooked that the motor unions represent only the motoring section of the public. —Yours, etc.,
reality. February 22, 1965.
