L. Newton And R.S.A. Pair Win Bowls Championships

L. Newton (Dallington) won the open singles and A. C. Archer and N. A. McNab (R.S.A.) the open pairs when these two Canterbury Bowling Centre championships were decided on Saturday. Also held were the first three rounds of the champion of champion pairs. They were played on the “sudden death’’ principle and eight pairs went through unbeaten. In the open pairs V. Armstrong and J. O. Thompson (Shirley) entered the final with their two lives intact. McNab and his lead had only one life, but accounted for Shirley, 26-5, in the first game. In the second game they triumphed again, 22-13. J. Dale (Burwood), who met Newton in the final of the singles, could not say this year, as he justly could last year, “I was robbed.” In the final of this tournament last year E. Colville (St. Albans) played a bad last bowl which wicked off a short bowl and ran in to take the shot and game. However, on Saturday, Dale was outplayed by Newton although he did cause some excitement in the second to last head with some delightful shots. Newton Was Steadier Newton was much the steadier of the two and led 9-3 on the eighth head. Dale on the next head showed a glimpse of his old form and drew three excellent shots, but was outplayed over the next three heads, Newton then leading, 12-7. The next head was very open but Newton lapsed badly, allowing Dale to take another three shots. This brought fresh life into the game but Newton opened the gap again with a two on the next head. A brilliant drive by Dale paid a good dividend. Newton was holding two shots and Dale, with his drive, took out both to be three up. He was now only 13.14 down and it appeared as if the game at this stage could go either way. On the next head, which was a very tight one, Newton held two shots. He then held three on the next until Dale, with his last bowl, saved two. The eighteenth head, had Dale succeeded with his shot, could have changed the complexion of the game. The head was very open, Newton holding one shot. Dale had every opportunity, for had he trailed the kitty he could have been three up or if he had taken out Newton’s shot bowl he could have collected four shots, but he elected to draw and was over. Shot 4ft Away Newton now led-18-13 and was holding two -shots on the next head when Dale tried a running shot and missed. But with his last he used a full-blooded drive and killed the head. Both bowled badly on the next head and were well off the kitty but "? t h ? flnal count Dale got the shot four feet away. had a chance on the full length head he had thrown but the bowling by both players on this head was rather wild. Newton held the shot a little behind the kitty with his first. Dale was well wide with hls first two. Newton was not going to give Dale a target after his great exhibition of driving on the previous head and was satisfied with one shot and matched Dale’s bowls with his others. Newton with his last was close enough for a second shot and Dale drove with his last to try and kill the head but only took out one of Newton’s bowls, leaving one shot, and Newton did not play his last bowl. Open Pairs The first game of the open pairs was one-sided all the way. Never at any stage did Armstrong or Thompson show any likelihood of matching the exacting bowling of Archer and McNab. Archer’s leading was a delight and whenever he failed, which was seldom, McNab was equal to the occasion. , Steady drawing enabled the R.S.A. pair to gather in points, to lead 10-0 on the seventh head. Shirley stopped their run on the next with a single to open its account. Over the next six heads. R.S.A. scored five to Shirley's four to lead 15-5. The next four spelt disaster for Shirley, for on these R.S.A. scored a 4,2, and 5 to add 11 points to its total and here the game ended with four heads left unplayed. Shirley was now reduced to one life and was on equal terms with R.S.A., and the second game was played in the afternoon on the Opawa green. Faster Green There was little to praise in this game except the steady play of the R.S.A. pair after suffering a big set-back in the early stages. The only really good head seen in the game was the twelfth when all twelve bowls were clustered round the kitty. The green for this game was much faster than that in the morning and over the first four heads Archer and McNab were struggling to find their weight and green. The Shirley pair, winning the first five heads to lead 8-0, were not producing good bowls but were scoring from the bad play of the R.S A pair. On the sixth head Shirley was holding three shots until McNab rose to the occasion with his last to draw the shot and record his first point. The lead, mg on the next head' would have disgraced a.. " first-vear player with no bowl closer than five feet. The skips did little better until McNab with his last, drew the.-shot three feet away. On the next head Archer drew to within two feet and Armstrong got inside. There was no further change, leaving Shirlev with one shot. Armstrong on the next head drew to within two feet and none of the others could improve on this. At this stage, after nine heads, Shirlev led, 10-2. On the tenth head Shirley played bad bowls and RS A took four shots. After losing on the long heads McNab called for a short one and this had both the leads struggling hard. Thompson, with only one bowl on the head, played a foolish running shot to take out his opponent's bowl and only succeeded in taking out his own to go three down. The procession had now started and Shirley failed to score again until the nineteenth head when it was 10-21 down. A single on the next head to R.S.A. ended the game with one head left unplayed.

A very noticeable feature of this game was the large number of narrow and wide bowls that were played and the Shirley pair, in particular, did not seem to be able to correct this fault with their next deliveries. Champion Pairs One of the main surprises in the early rounds of the champion of champion pairs was the defeat of the Sydenham representative (H. Deavoll) bv Belfast (K. Giles), 22-19. Another prominent skip to fall was Beckenham’s M. Yugovich, who was eliminated in the first round by Barrngton (W. D. Sams), 21-20. Last year's winners, .1. R. Smith and R. A. Lulham, were beaten in the last game of the day, by Mona Vale (T. W. Round). Results: Open Singles Finaf.—L. Newton (Callington) 19, J. Dale (Burwood) IS. Open Pairs A. C. Archer and N. A.
