COLLEGIANS RECOVER

47-7, Then Score 175 Although losing the initiative In the early afternoon, when Old Collegians recovered from 47 for seven to 175 all out, EastShirley held a strong hand at stumps in the match at Elmwood Park. With five wickets standing, it needs only 12 runs for a firstinnings lead but, if bonus points are to be earned, the runs will have to be made in five balls. The East-Shirley bowlers, par ticularly the openers, I. D Shewan and W. J. Thomas, gave thpir best performance this season in the morning plav. Thomas started the rot with two successive wickets in his second over and Shewan, bowling his best this season, shortly after took three in eight balls. However, after lunch, the determination of the recent Christ’s College first eleven captain, W. N. Wilder, and the experience of R. T. Hunt, saw Old Collegians start on the road to recovery and the good work continued by O. A. Hutchinson and N F. Curtis, who mixed some crude blows with a number of polished cover-drives. East-Shirley lost an early wicket but steady batting all the way put it in its strong position and poised for its initial firstinnings lead of the season. s R. Home batted freely and with plenty of confidence while P G. Coman. promoted in the order, kept his head down ad mirably. while not forsaking his attacking shots. Then R. A. Hicks and R. J. Dean save quiet support to J. D Capstick, who swung hard and often in his second successive and was only out, five minutes before time, trying to get the first-innings lead and bonus points. Empires: Messrs A. R. Knight ■nd T. F. Mathie.
