Barrett Top-Scorer With Third 100

Scoring his third century this season the young Riccarton batsman, G. T. Barrett, placed his team in a strong position against Sydenham on the first dav of the ninth round of senior cricket matches. Sydenham, only three points behind the leading team, Old Boys, was 96 for four wickets at stumps in reply to Riccarton’s 313.

West - University made a bold bid for championship honours when it took first innings and bonus points against St. Albans in a low-scoring match. Steady, if somewhat slow batting, gave Old Boys a sound foundation against Lancaster Park and at the other end of the ladder, East-Shir-ley looks likely to gain its first innings win of the reason in its match against Old Collegians.

Although there were some good individual scores much of the cricket was uninteresting. Bowlers and fieldsmen seemed lethargic and batsmen, too, appeared to be affected by the same malaise. B. F. Hastings was one exception. He continued his run of good scores with an attractive and forceful 63 against St. Albans. C. J. Stevens, M. A. Clements (Old Boys) and J. D. Capstick (East Shirley) were the only other batsmen to pass 50. B. A. Salt gained a good reward for his steady offspinners when he took six for

82 against Riccarton and P. A. Sharp and P. G. Z. Harris each took five wickets. Scores:— St. Albans 134, WestUniversity 142/8. Riccarton 315, Sydenham 96/4. Old Boys 295, Lancaster Park 34/0. Old Collegians 175, East-Shirley 164/5.
