Youth Held Up Hotel

NAPIER, February 21.
A Napier hotel manager told police today a masked youth with a .22 automatic rifle demanded the hotel’s takings and threatened to kill him last night.
Mr D. R. Hensleigh, of the Hotel Cabana, said that after the jouth was distracted by a customer he then disarmed the youth in a struggle.
Detective - Sergeant H. Baldock said today police had questioned a young man in Napier Public Hospital last night in connexion with the incident.
Police are also searching for a man who drove off during the scuffle which took place in the hotel’s foyer The detective said a rifle taken from the scene last night was found to be unloaded.
Mr Hensleigh said today a youth, with his face masked by a white bandage, produced a rifle in the foyer about 5.55 on Saturday night.
“He said to me, ‘I want all your money or I’ll kill you’,” said Mr Hensleigh.
“Just then a customer in the foyer ducked through to the bar and this distracted the youth’s attention. 1 pounced on him. grabbed hold of the rifle and disarmed him.
“By the time we had finished with him he needed [that bandage.” I The condition of the youth in hospital is said to be comI fortable.
