Govt. Worries On Maori Land

(New Zealand Press Association)

GISBORNE, February 21.

Some Maori incorporations were doing well and increasing production but some were slipping back, said the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) today after a three-day east coast tour with Mr P. T. Watene, M.P., and officials.

“My concern is that land reversion could reach the stage where it is no longer economic to use taxpayers’ money to bring land back,” said Mr Hanan. Mr Hanan said he had talked with Maori elders about legislation under consideration to help Maoris to retain their land and provide incentives for increased production.

He said seven developmental schemes showed that great progress was possible with modern scientific methods. adequate capital and good management

Some landowners in 1959 had handed reverted land to the Maori Affairs Department and production had increased five-fold in the meantime, said Mr Hanan.
