‘STUMBLING BLOCK’

Regulation On Towing (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU. Feb. 19. The regulation prohibiting farmers from towing agricultural implements behind cars or trucks was a “stumbling! block to production’’ and I should be removed, said Mri W. J. Penno, at a meeting] of the South Canterbury ex-! ecutive of Federated Farmers! today. The Dominion finance] committee of the organisa-' tion had considered, and] shelved, a South Canterbury! remit seeking an amendment to the traffic regulations. A letter from the trans-] port officer (Mr J. C. Adams) said it was believed the Government was considering proposals for liberalisation of] the regulations relating to the cartage of farm products] and requisites along the roads I on trailers drawn by “E” plate tractors. “It would be unwise at this stage to seek further concessions of the type envisaged in our remit,” the letter added. Today's meeting of the South Canterbury provincial executive “disagreed entirely.” The remit will be] submitted again. Mr Penno said the regula ] tion should never have been on the books. The principle was wrong. Dealers had “D” plates, saidl Mr Penno. “Why not ‘F’ plates for farmers? We are] only seeking equal rights.” | The matter had not even! been put to the Government, he said. Farmers had been asked to accelerate production, and the concession was something to which they were entitled, Mr] Penno said.
