Night Patrolman Gaoled For Theft

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 18. A man who stole property worth £123 from premises while on his rounds as a night patrolman, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., today.

Gordon Kenneth Elsley, aged 41, had earlier pleaded guilty to six charges of theft and one of receiving. Defending, Dr. A. M. Finlay said Eisley had undertaken responsibilities that his resources were unable to meet. The longer he was prevented from being a wage earner the deeper his problems would become. He had lost his job and was not a man who needed I

supervisional training. He was unable to pay a substantial fine. The Magistrate: “You betrayed your trust of those who paid you to care for their property. It was not a single theft, but several over a period. “You spent seven years with the London river police and 10 years with the police in New Zealand. Through this you would know the consequences of your actions,” he said.
