The Churchill Fund

Sir, —This fund and its aim are a fitting tribute to Sir Winston Churchill but let honour and sense prevail in its support. It requires no effort of ours to raise him to fame, nor this trust to ensure his place in history. He has won immortality himself. The opportunity to show appreciation of his greatness, and love of the compleat man, is welcomed by many, but it must be the individuals own choice and gesture. It is admirable that so many business firms, etc., desire to contribute, but the publicity of these, the disparaging remarks on the total reached, and the city and county councils’ generosity with monies entrusted to them for the upkeep of the city and county seems unbelievably out of character with the man and the aim. Giving means little when forced. Must the end always justify the means or may this fund be a genuine personal tribute with the total counted not in L s. d but in sincerity?—Yours, etc., S.I.C.
