PAYMENT REFUSED

Added Reserve Contributions

The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) has advised the Waimairi County Council that he considers there is no justification for additional reserve contributions to be made by the Government to the council for leased railway land. In a letter to the M.P. for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly), who made representations to the Government on behalf of the council, the Minister said the Counties Amendment Act 1961 did not bind the Crown and therefore the Railways Department was not legally bound to, pay the reserve contributions provided for in the act.

The Minister’s reply was received without comment.
