FARMERS TO KEEP WATCH

Monopolies In Transport

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Feb. 19. The South Canterbury executive of Federated Farmers today unanimously endorsed a Temuka branch remit “that the dominion transport committee keep a close scrutiny on monopolies in the transport industry." The branch said amalgamation of transport companies licensed to carry goods, including livestock, from one end of the country to the other and backed by Australian capital was serious, and could have a detrimental effect on agricultural production.

Speakers said the transport industry in New Zealand obviously required some further investigation to bring it up to date, and the situation warranted close supervision. If the Government could spend money and time protecting the newspaper industry it should do the same for the transport industry, a speaker said.
