“Miss Joneses” Disappearing
(N.Z.P.A.-Xtuttr—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 15. Spinsters would soon become very precious, a woman member of Parliament claimed tonight. Dame Patricia Hornsby Smith, herself a spinster, told members of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Club that the stalwart “Miss Joneses” who had given a lifetime’s service to employers were fast disappearing. Today with more boy babies than girls being born, most women got married young and industry would find it hard to maintain the present women’s labour force, let alone increase it, unless it provided refresher courses for the over-40’s.
"Today, we have hearty young grandmothers of 40, and there is no reason why they should not start a new career at 40,” she said.
