Palmer, Charles Golf Tour Planned For N.Z.
“The Press’* Special Service
AUCKLAND, February 17. Arnold Palmer, the world’s greatest golfer, is likely to be seen in New Zealand for a week either in November or early in 1966, probably in February.
Palmer’s business manager, Mr Mark McCormack, a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer, has been in correspondence with W. D. and H. 0. Wills (New Zealand), Ltd., which proposes to sponsor the tour, and negotiations are progressing fruitfully. Mr McCormack, who is known in golf as “Mr Ten Per Cent,” initiated the first approach through the New Zealand player, R. J. Charles, who is also one of his stable. At this stage it is proposed Palmer will tour New Zealand in association with Charles.
They will play each other in at least four matches, probably one in each of the four main centres. A fifth match may be played in some populous golfing centre such as Manawatu, Wanganui or Hamilton.
Palmer will not appear in a New Zealand tournament.
It is possible that the coincidence of a tour in November with the opening of the tournament circuit could adversely affect this arrangement. In such a case, a tour next February or March could be regarded as a certainty.
