Challenge Set By South Africans

(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyright) PORT ELIZABETH, February 17. South Africa declared at its lunch total of 178 for four, leaving England to score 246 runs in 240 minutes to win the fifth and final test today. England leads 1-0 in the series.

South Africa had resumed the final day at 62 for one, leading by 129 runs after dismissing England for 435. It lost a wicket at 69, another at 124, and the fourth of the innings at 178, but added 116 runs in the prelunch period. Stubborn batting by the lower order England batsmen thwarted South Africa’s efforts to gain control of the match yesterday. England trailed South Africa’s first innings total of 502 by only 67, far less than seemed likely at one stage. A ninth-wicket stand of 64 in 93 minutes between J. M. Parks and D. A. Allen changed the course of the match. Immediately before lunch England lost three wickets while the total stayed on 346—E. J. Barlow having a hand in all three dismissals. England, resuming at 278 for five, soon passed the 302 mark needed to save the follow-on, and the overnight pair, N. L Thomson and M. J. K. Smith added 69 runs for the sixth wicket in 106 minutes. Then a dramatic turn of events put South Africa back on top. Barlow Succesful Barlow, brought on as a desperate measure to split the stand, had Smith caught behind the stumps by J. H. B. Waite, and then had P. H. Parfitt lbw. He gained these success in eight balls and in between held Thomson at slip from a delivery by A. McKinnon. Then Parks and Allen halted the Springbok hopes of a breakthrough until Barlow again claimed a wicket, having Parks caught behind Finally, the last wicket pair, Allen and K. E. Palmer, held the Springboks off for a further 35 minutes while they put on 25. When the South Africans ,

batted a second time there was no chance for the batsmen to score quick runs. T. L. Goddard went when the total reached 30 after 50 minutes when he lashed out in desperation at Thomson to give Boycott a catch at midon. The England captain, Smith, bowled his pace men for the two hours to the close. SOUTH AFRICA First Innings .. SO2 Second Innings T. L. Goddard, c Boycott, b Thomson ..13 t. J.
