ORIENTAL QUEEN
Early Sailing For Nelson The Japanese liner, Oriental Queen, which arrived at Lyttelton from Timaru shortly after 5 pun. yesterday with 60 Australian and 150 New Zealand passengers aboard on a South Island round cruise will now sail for her next port. Nelson, earlier than expected today. Originally scheduled to sail at 4 pm, the Oriental Queen will now leave at 2.15 pm. because her master (Captain M. Kamaya) wishes to have plenty of time to allow for the tide at Nelson. The ship will now be open to the public from 1 pm. until 2 p.m. today instead of 2 p.m. until 3 pm. as originally planned. About 50 persons were on the wharf to meet the cruise liner when she berthed. Many passengers went to Christchurch, but -quite a number preferred to stay aboard ship last evening. This morning many passengers will make bus tours of Christchurch and the Port Hills. Commenting on the frustrations regarding the shipboard bar and shop facilities enforced by the Customs Department at Wellington, an Auckland passenger, Mr C. H. Rosenfeldt, said that a much more relaxed atmosphere had prevailed since Timaru. The lounge bar aboard the Oriental Queen was open at normal shipboard hours at Timaru.
Small essential domestic purchases were also now available, he said.
