Pope Paul has received two emissaries of the Eastern Orthodox Church and described their meeting as the beginning of a new stage In relations between Rome and the East The emissaries—Metropolitan Melition of Elioupolis and Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Myra—were sent by the Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople, whom the Pontiff met in Jerusalem in January last year. The two Metropolitans called on the Pope to further contacts between the two churches. The Pope said in reply to an address by Metropolitan Mention: “It will be possible to say in future: here, centuries of history have ended: here, a new stage in relations between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox East has begun. It Is a singularly solemn moment”
