The Gloucesters’ Accident
Sir,—There are curious in- . consistencies in the reports ; of the Gloucesters’ car crash. ■ On February 1 “The Press” ; reported that the chauffeur , was driving the Royal car , and suffered a broken nose, . and that the Duke’s valet was , also riding in the front of 1 the car with him. Yesterday the report stated, with- ; out comment, that the Duke : was driving the car. Why has no hint of the cause been reported, and why was it originally stated that the chauffeur was driving? Was the car being driven, in fact, by the Duchess, whose injuries (like the chauffeur’s and the valet’s) were evidently greater than the Duke’s?— Yours, etc., EXPLANATION PLEASE. February 10, 1965. [The managing editor of the New Zealand Press Association (Mr H. L. Verry) says: “The first report was incorrect. The error of stating that the chauffeur was driving was perhaps an understandable one in view of the fact that he was in the car, and the information first given to the police seems to have been rather sketchy. As for the cause of the accident, it was reported at the time that the car skidded, overturned, and plunged into a field.”]
