Maori Girls At Avonside H.S.
The 43 girls from Te Wai Pounamu College had settled into Avonside Girls’ High School very well indeed, reported the principal, Miss P. Stevenson to a meeting of the school’s board of governors. “I am very happy with the way they have settled in and have been accepted by the school and in turn have accepted the school. I do not anticipate any problems,” she said.
Already a group of seniors was giving active support and help to the school’s Maori Club, said Miss Stevenson. This year’s roll numbered 839 pupils. The school had 20 upper sixth girls, the largest number to date. There were 73 in the lower sixth. There were 260 new third form enrolments, she said. The fourth forms numbered 267 and there were 219 in the fifth forms.
A grant of £1560 was received from the Education Department to cover the cost of replacing tennis courts.
