RACING Game Dash To Front By Fencourt In Cup

“The Press” Special Service

HAMILTON. At his third try over a distance of more than a mile, Fencourt scored a great victory over Ttatua and 19 others in the £l9OO Even Stevens Gold Cup at Te Rapa yesterday.

With a furlong and a half to go Fencourt looked a forlorn chance. His rider, G. R. Edge, then pushed him through a gap on the inside and got him past Tatua, who seemed all over a winner, in the last few yards.

The first time Fencourt tackled a distance was when he finished sixth out of nine in the Great Northern Derby. The next time, in the Commonwealth Stakes, a mile and a quarter at Te Rapa on February 15, he beat all except Black Tudor. Between the Commonwealth Stakes and the Even Stevens Gold Cup he scored four wins, each over a sprint course.

The manner in which Fencourt carrying only 21b less than Tatua ran the last bit yesterday gave him the appearance of a very good stayer. At four years he might perhaps continue in good form over the longer distances. All going well, his next opportunity will be at weight-for-age in the Awapuni Gold Cup at the Manawatu autumn meeting towards the end of next month.

Tatua carried his 9-1 gamely, Royal Request ran most creditably for third and so did Dandeinee, fourth. The effort of Dandeinee was remarkable in that he was galloped on about a furlong- out and received wounds on a hind leg so serious that they required a dozen stitches. Fencourt was the seventh favourite each way and Tatua

was 1/1. Royal Request was an outsider. The most expensive failure was Apathy (2/2) who beat only two to the finish. Golden Defoe was another which came nowhere near expectations.

The Awapuni visitor Kaupane made all the pace and it was a consequence of his free galloping that Fencourt went the mile and a quarter in 2min 4 2-ssec, which, although far from a record, was good going on ground that contained little speed. Just Beyond Hamir tried to win the second leg, the Chartwell Handicap, all the way but the last bit of seven furlongs proved just beyond him and he gave in to Bridoon and Killeymoon. At the post only a nose separated Bridoon, which won, from Killeymoon and Hamir was a length and threequarters away. Without being successful Bridoon had gained a good many minor platings this season so his win was well deserved. He is one of A. Cook’s stable at Te Awamutu and Fencourt is trained by W. J. Hennessy at Te Aroha for a veteran owner, Mr E. J. Bygrave. The win and place return on Bridoon was £5 5s and £1 18s fid and the double, Fencourt and Bridoon, paid £95 4s 6d.

On-course bets came to £77,863 (Including £14,805 10s on doubles). There was no comparable meeting last year. Ran In Front Khoringa and Kaupane began fast and ran in front with a round to go in the Even Stevens Gold Cup. My Call, Felacita (inside) and Tatua. were very prominent and Dandeinee, Tax Free (wide), Royal Request and Fencourt, made up the next group. Kaupane drew clear of Khorringa in the next furlong and led to the mile by a length. Falacita was almost on terms with Khoringa. Tatua and My Call (wide) were next, putting a break on the next bunch headed by Royal Request and Tax Free. Golden Defoe led the others, but a couple of lengths further away. Kaupane continued at a solid pace along the back and the field was well strung out at the half-mile. Kaupane led by a length from Felaciti which had two lengths on Tatua and Khoringa. There was a further gap to Dandeinee and another to My Call and Royal Request. Into the straight Kaupane kept clear from Felaclta, who was trailed by Tatua. With a furlong to go Kaupane was spent. Tatua came to the front in the centre from Royal Request and Dandeinee.. Fencourt then made a brilliant run along the inside and he went past Tatua in the last few strides. Royal Request hung on well for his third and Dandeinee and Wilful (finishing well), were fourth and fifth. Then came Kaupane, Earl of Foxwood, Hi Minx, Umpah. High Mark, Tax Free and El Cortez. Hamir Ahead Mattiwilda and Summer Blaze dwelt at the start of the Chartwell Handicap. Yardstick began fast and so did Don Palatine and Kelleymoon. Hamir dashed to the front in the first furlong and led to the six by a couple of lengths from Good Day Peter and Hilldale. A length further back came Bridoon, Lordly Knight, Yardstick, Semprini and Don Paia tine.

Hamir went further ahead and reached the half-mile, out by four lengths. On the turn into the straight he led by a length and a half from Good Day Peter, Hilldale and Bridoon. Killeymoon made a run in the centre.

Hamir kept on gamely until half a furlong from the post. Bridoon and Killeymoon then drew clear and after a great struggle Bridoon just won.

Hamir faded, but nevertheless kept third clearly from Prince Mamhoud. Semprini was fifth, followed by Good Day Peter, Mattiwilda, Hilldale and Don Palatine.
