Representing The Queen

The Duke and Duchess of Kent arrived in Bathurst today to represent the Queen at Gambia’s independence celebrations.
They were met by the Governor, Sir John Warburton Paul, and the Prime Minister, Mr D. K. Jawara. Eight-year-old Isatou Jallow, daughter of a bank manager, presented a bouquet to the Duchess. Gambia, Britain’s oldest and last West African territory, j gains independence on Thursday after almost 18 months ;of internal self-government. It will stay in the CommonI wealth.
