SERVICE IN MALAYSIA

Selection Of Sailors

Five Christchurch sailors —out of a Dominion total of 69—have been selected for the crews to man the two coastal minesweepers which are to be brought from the reserve in Singapore and employed for service off Malaysia. This is part of the increased aid to Malaysia announced recently by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). The Christchurch men, and the ships from which they have been drawn, are:—Able Seaman T. L. Brosnahan (Irirangi), Able Seaman M. A. McCallum (Pukaki), Able Seaman G. O. Johnston (Pukaki), Cook, E. K. Foz (Pukaki) and Engineering Mechanic A. D. Wilson (Pukaki). Also included is Leading Engineering Mechanic R. H. Wilson (Philomel) and Leading Electrical Mechanic B. C. C. Foster (Rotoiti) both of Timaru, and Engineering Mechanic K. G. Butcher (Pukaki) of Rangiora. Others selected include Engine-Room Artificer R. W. Murphy (Philomel) of Kaikoura, Radio Electrical Mechanic A. L. Forrest (Pukaki) Blenheim, Able Seaman L. C. T. Lalla (Rotoiti), and Radio Operator B. A. Newport (Pukaki), both of Nelson. Plans for the men’s departure are still being made but it seems that they will begin leave towards the end of February, and leave New Zealand in March and April. They will probably be preceded by a small advance party.
