Influenza
Sir.—According to your report from Canberra it appears likely that the Leningrad influenza epidemic will spread to Australia. I presume it will eventually spread to New Zealand, and
it appears the New Zealand authorities are not taking any immediate action. I would like to know if there is available here a type of vaccine similar to that which will be used in Australia. If so, will . all doctors have access to this?—Yours, etc., INFLUENZA-CONSCIOUS.
February 10, 1965. [The deputy-director of the Division of Public Health (Dr. C. N. Derek Taylor) replies: “Information received from the World Health Organisation indicates that the influenza experienced at Leningrad is of a mild type, affecting mostly children. Influenza vaccine is available in New Zealand and people who wish to have it should consult their medical practitioner.”]
