HURRICANE RELIEF

£4OOO Given

By N.C.C.

The executive of the National Council of Churches is giving £4OOO for hurricane and flood relief in Fiji, India, Ceylon, and the Philippines. It has already sent £3OOO to Suva.

At its meeting in Christchurch yesterday the executive decided to contribute £5OO to an appeal in the Philippines. Another £5OO will be sent to north Ceylon and South India in response to an appeal from the headquarters of the World Council of Churches in Geneva.

The gift to the Philippines was made in response to an appeal from the director of interchurch aid (Dr. L. Cooke) for contributions to an emergency fund of 66,000 dollars to aid the people to recover from hurricane damage. Dr. Cooke said that the cumulative effect of a whole series of disasters was quite overwhelming. Last year there were 29 storms, almost twice the normal number. One thousand persons lost their lives, and property damage was more than £2om.
