UNDERSEA NOISES

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. Underwater noises coming from a recently-dis-covered peak beneath , the sea in the Kermadec ridge is to be investigated by naval scientists. Mr P. H. Barker, of the Naval Research Laboratory. Auckland, told the Science Congress today that the ridge appeared to extend almost to White Island along a series of peaks and ridges. It was possible that the ridge and the trough associated with it extended right to the New Zealand coast, but were partly buried by sediment from the Bay of Plenty rivers. On the peak of this ridge was of considerable interest to the naval laboratory. “It appears to be the site of intense underwater noise which we consider to be associated with volcanic activity,” said Mr Barker.
