REQUEST GRANTED
January 26 Decision
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 5.
Indonesia’s determination to “crush Malaysia” was the reason why New Zealand had decided to make troops available for operations in Borneo, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said in Auckland today.
“With the additional assistance now being offered, the total strength in personnel of the New Zealand forces serving in Malaysia will be more than 1300 men, all of whom are assisting in its defence,” said Mr Holyoake. Mr Holyoake said the decision to offer more aid to Malaysia was made by the Cabinet at its first meeting this year on January 26 before he left for London. The decision was made In response to a “recent Malaysian request.” “The Government has been concerned at reports during recent weeks of a considerable build-up of Indonesian regular forces in Sumatra and Kalimanton (IndonesianBorneo),” he said.
