Office Begins Conversion

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, February 5.

Preliminary work has begun to convert existing manual and machine accounting procedures in the Public Trust Office to electronic data process* n?g-

Announcing this today, the Minister in charge of the Public Trust Office (Mr Rae) said a reeent specialised survey had shown that new electronic processes now available could be effectively applied to trust accounting and related work. Mr Rae said the Public Trust Office would not require a computer of its own. “Modern electronic equipment capable of processing the work of the office as well as that of other departments, is being Installed by the Treasury, and would be used for this purpose,” he said.

The Minister said as the introduction of decimal coinage in 1967 would itself pose a major conversion task in dealing with the financial records of some 20,000 estates and trusts, it was aimed to start electronic data processing before decimal coinage day so the computer could carry out the greater part of that conversion. “It is confidently expected that with the transfer to electronic data processing, there will be increased efficiency and an improved service to clients of the Public Trust Office,” said Mr Rae.
