GUN MYSTERY

WELLINGTON, February 4. The Inspector of Prisons (Mr I. J. D. Mackay), said tonight the gun used by the escapers had not been taken from a prison officer. At this stage the way in which the weapon came to be in the hands of tiie prisoners was a mystery, he said. He could not say definitely who produced it in the basement when the bid for freedom was made. Mr Mackay said the prisoners had to pass through a number of gates to get clear and keys obtained from one of the captive officers were used to get through them. He said he would Ay to
