ROYAL BID-TE ARO PICKED FOR C.J.C. DOUBLE

Summer Meeting At Riccarton

Royal Bid should be equal to the task of master* ing top weight of 93 in the Midsummer Handicap on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Riccarton tomorrow.

Royal Bid has been a notable contributor towards a magnificent record by Otago and Southland-owned gallopers in major New Zealand races since the beginning of the year.

In winning the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham last Saturday he contributed £2600 to a total of £18,981 5s in first prizes won in the North Island by Otago and Southland-owned horses in that time. Lucky Son started a golden month on January 1 by winning the Auckland Cup.

Eiffel Tower won the Wellington Cup last Saturday week, and two days later Palisade won the Summer Handicap on the same course.

Royal Bid is owned in Southland by Mr L. B. McKenzie but is trained at Riccarton by V. D. Clutterbuck, and was the lone winner for that centre at the Wellington Cup meeting. Royal Bid looks well and everything asked of him in training since his return from Trentham has been reassuring. He is up 171 b on the weight he carried at Trentham, but on the credit side this is a much smaller and, it seems, weaker field and a race two furlongs shorter. Opposition in strength for Royal Bid should come mainly from the visiting horses, Pomare, Llanmai, Foxy Boy, and Andalusia. Foxy Boy and Andalusia are last-start winners, and Pomare and Llanmai ran promisingly as milers at the Wellington Cup meeting. Second Leg The Wellington-owned, Otaki-trained Te Aro, and the Dunedin-owned Riccartontrained Hushaway are expected to dominate the finish of the Craven Plate, which is the second leg of the T-A.B. double. They raced without success st Trentham, but Te Aro was a promising fifth over seven furlongs on the second day. Hushaway damaged a plate in the George Adams Handicap, and that could have accounted for a weak finish from a prominent position. Fields, with riders, are reviewed below.

LADY YORK: Ran second to Beauzaml here at the Cup meeting but has done poorly on North Island campaign since then. This could be easier for her, though. LAST COUNT: Has not been placed since graduating to open company, but good hack form would give him some chance here. TOTARA LAO: Has sound sprint form on the West Coast but is an unknown quantity under these conditions. MCNIGHT: Ran fourth in highweight at Oamaru at New Year at last start but was well beaten tn small field. WHITE SKIES: No form. GROAT GUNS: Second in highweight at Oamaru at New Year then poor fifth behind Zinder tn Kurow Cup. BAHOARSHAR: No form. MTGRID: Won hack event over this distance at Waikoualti two starts back but last time out was well beaten in similar event. CUPPER: Failed last time ott at Kurow but sticks on well and form before that was fair. Zinder The Slug Timna

Two placed efforts from three previous starts. TUSCUS: Has not raced for over two years. AOUDO: Close up third at Washdyke last time out was good effort. SYMBOLIST: Form poor. DOWMAHCA: Has not held the form he was in late last year and was last-start eighth at Washdyke. LUCKY CROWN: Has failed to Hatter at recent starts. MISSION GIRL: Form only moderate and would need to show Improvement. MUTCH: Ran fair race for seventh at Washdyke in only start this season and could be an Improver. SANDRA GLEN: Last to finish at Ashburton in similar event and not fancied here. BY APPOINTMENT: Last at Kurow last start. CORKSCREW: Round about the money in nearly all his starts on the West Coast lately. Last-start third at Westland. HAYMAN: Failed at Washdyke in second start this season, could improve on that run. RED BANK: Last-start fourth at Hororata and would probably appreciate this track much better. TUMBLE: Would have no show on two runs to date. WE WOOD: Tried a middle distance at Oamaru last start and failed. Had fair form before that, though, and could be a chance. YATAMA: Making first appearance for the season and should need the run. FARIS MODEL: North Islander which was placed two starts back at Masterton. Ran a fair race last start at Ashhurst for seventh. PIKELET: Would have to Improve on recent form. REEF: Failed In only start this season at Hororata. SAILOR'S FLIGHT: Fell at last start when well back. Previous form of little note. WYNSOME: Could be a good chance. STATUS SYMBOL: In good form at present. Won under this weight at Waikoualti last start and had a win and two placings from three previous starts. COLONEL'S LADY: Scored wins at last two starts on West Coast, but both against maidens and this will be tougher. MISTER BUD: Last-start tenth at Waikoualti was completely out of character with this fellow. Has been out of tbe money only twice so far and was placed twice at Dunedin before Waikoualti. WESTER: Did nothing at Trentham and previous form was not good. Showed some ability at the beginning of the season, though. PAWNEE: Last-start sixth at Washdyke. Before that won a maiden event on same course. JAYESS: Two wins and two placings over on the Coast at last four starts but this will be different. SEEAYSEE: Last-start winner at Oamaru and could be in it. Previous form sound. CORAL PRINCE: Not likely on last start run at Washdyke. CLEOPATRA: Scored a win and a second against maidens on the West Coast and could have some show. SUMMER LAD: In poor form recently, although at last start was forced wide most of the way over a middle distance. PALAMETTE: Latest runs In dlcate little chanee. SIR LIMOND: Sixth last start at Trentham indicates a chance here. Has shown some promise. COSETA: Second at Waikoualti at second race start. Could be in the finish again. DANNY KAYE: Has speed, but has not raced up to ability shown in trackwork. Could go better in this weak field, though. BANERVA: First start. DIPMATE: First start. PLAY FAIRER: First start. BLUE BAYOU: First start. Halfbrother to good northern galloper, Antao. BROOKFIELD’S HOPE: First start. HON RODDY: First start. SEMINOLE: Ninth at Washdyke in only run to date. ROYAL BID: Won in really fast time at Trentham, was unlucky eighth In Wellington Cup and was placed at two previous starts. Looks the logical winner . LLANMAI: Ran well at Trentham. Was sixth in Adams mile on final day. ANDALUSIA: Won at Wingatul at last start and must be given a chance here. GOLDEN GLEN: In good form down south and was last start fourth at Southland behind Eiffel Tower. ( FOXY BOY: Won easily In Ashhurst Cup at last start and could be dangerous again. MARLOW: Would not be fancied much In this. POMARE: Ran well first up at Trentham for seventh over a mile and stays well. Crossed the line second in last year's New Zealand St. MORMS er FRAHCIS: Has ability but on recent efforts would not stand much chance here. GOLD FIND: Was the principal in a race mix-up at Hokitika when fourth last start after losing several lengths at start. This looks a bit rich, though. BIG SMOKE: Will be all the rage after deadheat for first at Trentham. Preceded that with two unlucky second placings, one also at Trentham. CHALBOROUGH: Mixed one sound effort for second with two poor performances at Trentham in high-weight class. Would have a chance if he produced best. MISJUDGE: Recent form uninspiring. GLENMIST: Ran well for second at Hokitika at this distance last start and has been most consistent on the CoasL LESLIE BELL: Two good efforts lately. Last start third at Kurow over 9f. UP AND UNDER: Last two starts at Trentham poor efforts but before that ran three placings in a row on North island tracks. STANDOUT: Good effort at Trentham for fourth last start and if track is fast could be the winner. EVERSLEY: Form does not look good enough for this. IRINA: Good effort last start for fourth in high-weight at Vincent. Could be the surprise packet. WINDVALE LASS: Poor effort last start at Trentham. Was fourth there at start before, though, and previous form good. SIRTAX: Has tried and failed on West Coast tracks and looks out of it here.

TE ARO: Good fifth at Trentham over this distance at last start and previous form fairly good. Looks a definite prospect. GENERAL GILBERT: Quite a good sprinter when right. Trounced the opposition on the West Coast in last two starts. This is much tougher but he could have a chance. WAVERLEY: Hardly likely on recent runs. ROYAL LEIGH: Occasionally runs a good one but has been out of form lately. SATINETTE: Last-start third at Dunedin after another placed effort. This is harder but might be close. CANADIANA: Ran last in sprint at Trentham last start and previous form not up to much. RACE GUIDE: Runs well on occasions but hardly likely to trouble this field. APACHE: Failed over a middle distance last start but is a fair sprinter and previous two starts yielded placings. DARK SEAMAN: Recent hack graduate with promise. Three wins from last four starts. Won over this distance at Kumara last start. Might be close up. GOLDEN VANITY: Known more as a stayer and might find this too short. CASTLE FLIGHT: In good form at present. Two wins then a close second at Wingatul last start. HUSHAWAY: Failed at Trentham but won here at the Cup meeting. This field has little of the class he met at Trentham. APPROVAL: In fair form lately and won sprint at Hororata two starts back. This is stronger but he could be close.

Scratched: Magic Mirror (20), Prize Melody (2), Caprlno (3). KNIGHTS REVIEW: Consistent runner on the West Coast lately but this will be much harder. FILSFAR: Not likely on last start run at Washdyke. MESSMAID: Found wanting on the West Coast circuit. LLANAWYN: On start this season was not impressive and others preferred. SCUFFLE: Good run for fourth at Waikoualti last start and would not be the worst of them. THE FRENCHMAN: Hurdler preparing for winter campaign. Not fancied. WYCOLA: Has speed and close second at Oamaru last start was promising effort. CRANSTON: Ran an improver's race for fifth at Waikoualti last time out at second start for season. GILPEY: Recent form indicates little chance here. GOLDEN THISTLE: Not fancied on recent efforts. TOWN TALK: First start for season and will probably need the race. TOLCARHE: In good form. Laststart winner at Kurow and placed at other two starts this season. Could still be improving. WALHALLA: Has been fifth at last three starts after a win in maiden class at Greymouth. CORRIE GILPIN: Beat only two at Dunedin last start and would have to improve. CAPLIN: Form poor. DEPENDING: No form in three starts to date this season.
