Lauthala Bay Run-down

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 6 Group Captain J. J. McDowell, of Wellington, relinquished command of the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Lauthala Bay, Fiji, today. The station will close officially on January 31. Group Captain McDowell, who will return to R.N.Z.A.F. Headquarters in Wellington, handed over the detachment to Wing Commander D. Flintoff. of Christchurch. Wing Commander Flintoff will command two Sunderland flying-boats which are expected to remain In Fiji till mid-1966. No. 5 Squadron is moving its base from Lauthala Bay to Hobsonville, which will become the centre of the R.N.Z.A.F. maritime operations, including Fiji. Hobsonville’s commanding officer, Wing Commander R. K. Walker, of Dunedin, has been promoted to group captain.
