More Accident Calls

Last month ambulances attended 87 accidents involving 112 patients, compared with 52 accidents involving 64 patients in December, 1963, said the secretary-treasurer of the Christchurch sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association (Mr G. A. Brown). In November, there were 73 accidents involving 103 patients. The association’s ambulances last month travelled 11,602 miles and carried 1917 patients, compared with 11,056 miles and 1676 patients in December, 1963. In November last year the ambulances travelled 10,946 miles with 2114 patients. Last month patients carried for miscellaneous reasons numbered 63. In November 66 were carried, and in December, 1963, 40 were carried.

Cost of Strikes.— Strikes in the United States during 1964 cost more than 23,000,000 man-days, the Bureau of Labour Statistics reported. This was the highest level since 1959 but better than the postwar average, the bureau said. Nearly one-third of the hours lost were in the motor industry.—Washington, January 6.
