PORT HILLS DRY
Fire Danger “Acute”
Passengers in sight-seeing and tourist buses are asked by the Heathcote County Council not to smoke while travelling along the Summit road. The fire danger on the Port Hills is acute. The council’s fire control officer (Mr E. F. Johnson) said yesterday that the tinderdry grass on the hills presented a very serious fire threat.
He appealed to all motorists and hikers to be very careful with cigarette butts.
The council declared a closed fire season on December 23. All fires in the open, including those in incinerators or other containers, are prohibited.
Mr Johnson said the council was issuing only a few permits for fires in certain residential areas.
The fire danger is also worsening in the forests of Canterbury. The Conservator of Forests in Canterbury (Mr F. J. Ranger) said the greatest danger existed in the Balmoral and Eyrewell forests. He also appealed to everyone to take care.
