Weak N.Z. Beer For Samoan Drinkers
“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. Samoan police authorities have approved the sale of a special low-strength New Zea-
land beer, selling at all stores and shops in Samoa. Although being sold at 3s a bottle, the price is due to the duty for a full-strength beer being imposed. If this
was to be relaxed by an amendment in the Customs regulations the beer could sell for about 2s. This would probably pay great dividends in cutting
down the consumption of dangerous, illegal liquor, and consequently many crimes of violence in the country, said the Samoan Commissioner of Police (Mr A. Philipp) recently. * ' ' Police believe that as much a$ 75 per cent of the methylated spirit being imported into Samoa is being drunk. Village stores report that huge orders of methylated spirits are being placed. Almost all the crimes of violence in the country could be blamed on the illegal drinking of home-brew or methylated spirit, said the commissioner.
