DEFIED ORDERS
Former Top Cadet (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 7. An R.A.F. officer who received the sword of honour at Cranwell in 1958 was yesterday sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and ordered to be cashiered for disobeying orders. The findings and sentence, at a court-martial at Tern Hill, Shropshire, are subject to confirmation. The officer is Flight Lieutenant Christopher Charles Lane, a helicopter instructor, who was the top cadet of his intake at Cranwell.
He admitted failing “with wilful defiance” to report to his squadron leader when ordered to do so by Wing Commander Geoffrey Cairns, and failing to fly in a Whirlwind helicopter when ordered by Wing Commander Cairns to do so. Flight Lieutenant Robert Chase, Lane’s defending officer, said Lane had received the sword of honour, then gone on to flying supersonic jets before moving to helicopters.
He had asked to resign from the R.A.F. after being told he was being posted to Borneo. This was refused, and the offences occurred after his second application to resign was rejected. “He now deeply regrets his action,” said Flight Lieutenant Chase.
