JANUARY 7. ARRIVAL OF ROBERTS, THE CHAMPION BILLIARD PLAYER. Our knights of the cue, and all lovers of the fascinating game of billiards, will be delighted by an advertisement which appears in our columns this morning, announcing the arrival in Christchurch of the champion billiard player, Roberts. His extraordinary performances in the Australian colonies and in Dunedin, when contending at enormous odds, and almost invariably with success, against the best colonial players, have been witnessed with delighted interest by thousands of spectators. Arrangements are in progress for allowing the public of Canterbury an opportunity of seeing some of these wonderful displays of skill, and no one who has any liking for the game would willingly miss the chance of seeing to what a pitch of perfection it can be brought
in the hands of this consummate master. PRINCESS’ THEATRE.—The reproduction of the "Octoroon” drew a large house last night at the Theatre. The cast of the piece is quite new; Mr Hall of course appeared in the character of Salem Scudder, and Mr Inglis as Pete. Mr Smith made a good McClosky —in the last scene especially he appeared to advantage. Zoe (Mrs Hall) and Dora Sunnysides (Miss A. Wiseman), were both ably represented. Tonight the Lyster troupe perform “Martha.” THE WEST COAST GOLDFIELD At the Greenstone and Three-Mile Creek, there are about 300 men. These diggings are yielding steadily, affording very good remuneration, but no heavy finds: a nugget, weighing 12 ozs. 5 dwts. is the largest yet found there. It was raffled for on Friday night; sixty members, at £1 each.
