(NZ.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, January 6. The third test between England and South Africa was proceeding quietly to its expected draw on the final day at Cape Town today. At lunch, South Africa was 123 for three, having added 84 runs for the loss of one wicket in two hours.

be 72 not out at lunch. R. G. Pollock was 16 not out. Yesterday, a century by M. J. K. Smith and a fine supporting innings by J. M. Parks saved England from the threat of defeat. Smith (121) and Parks (59) put on 117 for the sixth wicket and England reached 442 —only 59 runs behind South Africa’s first innings total of 501 for seven declared. The England opening bowlers, J. S. E. Price and N. 1. Thomson then took over to shock South Africa by claiming two wickets for 13 runs when the Springboks batted again. South Africa ended the day on 39 for two, 98 runs on. England started the day on 240 for four, still needing 62 to avert the follow-on. It lost P. H. Parfitt with only three runs added, but Smith and Parks ended South African hopes of a breakthrough. Smith, who started his in nings shakily, on Monday batted soundly and confidently yesterday anc topped his previous highest test score, 108. At the wicket just under five and a-half hours, he hit a six and 12 fours and was last out. Parks survived some anxious moments at the start of his innings, and, hitting lustily later on, had a six and seven fours in his 59. England batted five minutes short of 11} hours for 1 its lowest score in the series. However, it achieved the objective of first saving the folI low-on.
