General News

Watersiders At Work Waterfront work resumed at Lyttelton yesterday morning. and labour was scarce. One vessel, the Maunganui, was idle at 8 a.m. and the Napier Star and Rakaia were short manned. There were 493 men engaged but another 140 would have been required to have filled existing vacancies. From yesterday morning, Lyttelton ceased to be what was formerly known as a railway port, and all labour, both railside and shipside, came under the control of shipowners and stevedoring companies. Hitherto, watersiders working on the railside were engaged and paid by the New Zealand Railways Department.

Roses Frame Banned

A man banned by his local council from erecting a wooden frame in the garden to grow roses on, said: “1 was trying to enhance the neighbourhood,” “The Times” reported. Mr Ronald Hatch, aged 34, building foreman, of Broomwood gardens, Brentwood, Essex, sent the plan to Brentwood Urban Council for a rose frame for his bungalow garden. The documents came back stamped: “rejected.” The council said the proposal would “present a substantial intrusion into the street picture and could be detrimental to visual amenity.” Mr Hatch said: “This is the first time I have heard anyone say roses would spoil a street.” A council spokesman said: “The question of roses as such was not considered.” Warm Day The Dominion’s weather yesterday was again predominantly fine and warm. Similar weather and temperatures are expected today. Wellington had a maximum temperature of 72 degrees, Auckland. 73, Christchurch, 79, and Dunedin 69. The maximum temperature at Nelson was 76. —(PA.) Large Mural
