Apprentices Dominate The Taranaki Circuit

"The Press” Special Service

WANGANUI.

Apprentice jockeys dominated the open events on the Taranaki - Wanganui New Year galloping circuit. Heading the list was the Essexborn, 17-year-old, D. K. Moore, who took the Stratford T.A.B. double on New Year’s Day with Dr. Jekyll and Super Time, and then had a surprise Marton Cup success on the front running Kaupane. Moore, who is apprenticed to N- Crawford at Matamata, travelled south to assist the Waikato trainer, C. Casey, on the Taranaki circuit. He took three victories from four mounts at New Plymouth before annexing the Stratford double.

His Marton Cup engagement on Kaupane was a chance one. Originally S. B. Robertson was due to take the mount, but he could not make the weight so Moore accepted the ride. Another northern apprentice, D. Sanderson, from the Jennings stable at Pukekohe, took the Stratford second day first leg, the Malone Memorial, on Carlynn. The victory was Sanderson’s third and his first open handicap. Sanderson almost pulled off the second leg on Preferable, but he went down to the outsider Purserette in a tight six-horse finish. Purserette was ridden by a Feilding apprentice, J. D. Waite, who scored his first success.

Waite, who was having his seventh ride, is apprenticed to I. Tinsley, but is currently on loan to the trainer’s son, K. I. Tinsley, at Otaki. It was apt that 17-year-old

Waite should score his first win at Stratford for he worked there as a telegraph messenger till he entered a stable in 1963.
