Follow-On Saved By England

CAPE TOWN, January 5.
England, replying to South Africa’s 501 for seven declared, was 325 for five in its first innings at lunch on the fourth day of the third test at Cape Town today.
Fighting to avoid the fol-low-on, England had an early shock when it resumed at 240 for four. Only three runs were added when the lefthander, P. H. Parfitt, was bowled for 44.
This meant that with half its side out, England needed another 59 to avoid following on. Parfitt stepped across to G. Hall’s delivery, but offered no stroke to ball which broke sharply. It was the South African leg-spinner’s first test wicket.
However, the England captain, M. J. K. Smith, batting with care, and J. M. Parks, after an uncertain start, settled down to take England past the figure when South Africa could have enforced the follow on.
Yesterday, the Surrey batsman, K. F. Barrington, gave himself out to add another controversial incident to the match.
Barrington, who had made 49, cut a rising ball from the fast bowler, P. M. Pollock, and the South African fielders appealed for a catch at the wicket. •
The umpire, Mr J. Warner, did not signify Barrington was out, and the England batsman suddenly turned on his heel and made for the pavilion. Barrington's 49, made in 147 minutes with six boundaries, was part of a grim England fight to avoid the follow-on in the face of South Africa’s massive first innings score of 561 for seven.
At the close, England was 240 for four, having added only 216 in a full day of dourly defensive batting.
There was another incident earlier in the day when P. M. Pollock was cautioned by Mr Warner for persistently bowling short-pitched bumping balls. In sweltering heat South African hopes rose when they dismissed England’s opening pair, G. Boycott and R. W. Barber for 80, but Barrington and E. R. Dexter put on 90 for the third wicket in 153 minutes.
