INQUIRY BY MINISTER

Food Price Rises

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 5.

A spate of increases in Britain’s retail food prices has prompted the Economics Minister, Mr George Brown, to seek an explanation from trade associations, the Government announced last night. The announcement said that in doing so, Mr Brown was following the practice adopted when price increases were proposed in the public sector.

His questions will go out to the major manufacturing organisations. Mr Brown is understood to be particularly concerned about increases in grocery prices but he is not confining the inquiries to food. Since the General Election in October theer have been 2500 retail price rises in Britain, says the “Daily Mail.” The latest this morning were 157. which followed 238 a week ago.
