BAALBECK MAY BE TIMARU CUP WINNER

Baalbek may be the best of a moderate lot in the Timaru Cup, the principle race and first leg of th© double on the final day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke tomorrow.

Baalbek was an unlucky third in the High-weight today and shaped as if he is improving on anything he has done lately.

He will be ridden by the top jockey, J. R. Dowling, and this was a successful combination in the Winton Cup run at Invercargill in October.

Of the eight horses opposing Baalbek, Marlow, Fieldmaster and Tuborg ran today. Marlow fared best of them, winning the Publicans’ Intermediate Handicap of a mile and a-quarter and on that run he appears to be a light-weight prospect. Of the newcomers, Personify and Morris Francis will

probably come in for most support, though Personify’s form this season is several removes below his best.

Morris Francis failed by a nose to beat Picket over a mile and a-quarter at Greymouth on December 19. His earlier form suggests that a mile is his best distance, but he must be given a chance in this class.

Approval, a winner at Hororata recently, could be a worthy top-weight in the Rangitata Handicap, the second leg of the double. He has shown speed up to seven furlongs and might not have to bow to any of the horses which dominated the finish of the President’s Handicap today. Those horses were Picca Leigh, Daladana, Newbrook and Gabbler, which finished in that order almost in line.

As a last start winner, Cantelo with relief in weight, has a chance to be respected. She recorded the same time as the open sprinters in winning the Pentlow Intermediate Handicap today.
