‘EYEBALL’ SESSION

Radio ‘Hams’ Meet When two radio “hams” meet in person and not on the air, it is called an “eyeball” session, according to two American seamen in Lyttelton yesterday. One of them is Mr C. Friberg, jun., of Long Island, chief officer of the U.S.N.S. Private John R. Towle, which called at Lyttelton for refuelling on its way from McMurdo Sound to the Panama Canal. Before the ship sailed, Mr Friberg had a chat with Ensign Donald Epperson, aged 23, of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Ensign Epperson serves aboard U.S.S. Glacier.

Both have been in great demand over Christmas to send messages home. Mr Friberg recently had another “eyeball” session when he had a flight to the South Pole while the Private John R. Towle was in McMurdo Sound. He spent an hour at the Pole with another “ham.”
