Shark Scares At Taranaki Beaches
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, December 28. Children were scooped from the sea bysurf club members and adults rushed to safety when sharks were sighted close to two New Plymouth beaches this afternoon.
It was the first reported sighting of sharks near Taranaki beaches this summer.
Observant East End Surf Club members first spotted two sharks cruising towards the Strandon beach about 3.30 p.m. The sharks were about 20 yards out from the shore and in about 3ft of water and were approaching a crowd of nearly 50 people at the beach, which the club patrols. The sea was quickly cleared of swimmers. A surf canoe was launched and four crew members followed the sharks as they cruised towards the
