C.U. Rugby Team Beaten, 13-11

(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter —Copyright) TOKYO, December 27. The Canterbury University Rugby team went down 11-13 to Tokyo All Waseda today in its first defeat of its Japanese tour. The surprise loss was watched by a wildly shouting crowd of more than 8000.

The New Zealanders, who won their first three matches against Japanese teams last week, have two games still to play on the tour. They next meet All Meiji at Tokyo on Thursday. All Waseda dictated early play to run up a commanding 8-3 lead at half-time in a match played on a rainsoftened field. In the second half the New Zealanders played brilliantly to add eight points to the Japanese five. The second five-eighth, G. C. Nottage, scored New Zealand’s last try with a brilliant move which smashed the All Waseda backs’ defence.

However, the visitors failed to score in the last 22 minutes of play as the. Japanese defended soundly. They made a final desperate bid one minute before the end of the game when they rushed the ball out of the scrum.

The winger, B. Weenink. got to the five yard line and a try from the resulting play seemed certain when the final whistle blew.
