ESPERANTO CONGRESS
50 Delegates To Attend The thirtieth New Zealand Esperanto congress will be held in Christchurch from today to January 1, and more than 50 delegates from the 38 clubs in the country, from Whangarei and Dargaville to Invercargill, are expected to attend. The principal item for discussion is the United Nations plan to make 1965 a year of international cooperation. This is expected to encourage the growth of Esperanto and is being watched keenly by the 86 member nations of the Universal Esperanto Association, of which New Zealand is one. The New Zealand Teachers of Esperanto will also meet. This association has 90 members and teaches 2000 children in 21 schools. The New Zealand Scientists’ Esperanto Association will also hold its annual meeting. This congress will devote more time to cultural activities than has been the custom. Evening entertainments will include a drama competition, with all plays in Esperanto, an Esperanto music concert, and taperecordings of a children’s concert in Esperanto. The congress will end on Friday afternoon after an Esperanto oratory and literary session.
The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) will open the congress at the Y.W.C.A. Hall this evening, and Mr J. Mathison. M.P., a former student of Esperanto, will address the congress. The chairman of the congress will be Dr. C. J. Adcock, national president of the association and associate professor of psychology at Victoria University of Wellington.
