THE QUEEN REPLIES
Message To Celebration (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Dec. 25. Her Majesty the Queen has sent the following message to the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) on the occasion of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the first Christian service to be held at Oihi Bay by the preacher Samuel Marsden. “I thank you for the kind and loyal message which you have sent to me on behalf of the Maori and European people assembled on the shores of Rangihoua on the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Rev. Samuel Marsden's historic sermon on Christmas Day, 1814. “It is less than two years ago since I was in the Bay of Islands and it gives me much pleasure to recall my visit and to picture the scene there today. "I hope that these celebrations will not only be a commemoration of the coming of the gospel message to New Zealand, but will also inspire all present to dedicate themselves anew to the service of their God and country. “I send you all my greetings and to my Maori people I say Tena koutou I nga manaakitangi a te atua*. December 25, 1964, Elizabeth R.”
