£700 FOR CHARITY
Proceeds From Tree Sales The sale of Christmas trees by the combined Round Tables of Christchurch, Lyttelton, and Ashburton has amounted to about £7OO, about £2OO more than last year. The proceeds will go to needy children. Christmas trees have also been sold by the Boy Scouts and Crichton Cobbers during the last two weeks, but not on the same organised basis. A number of smaller organisations have also sold trees to the public. The City Council director of parks and reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) said his department had had about the usual amount of trouble with persons stealing trees. Near Chaney’s corner and in South Brighton, near Bridge street, were two areas where thefts of trees had been especially evident.
Mr Gilpin said the council gave 4500 Christmas trees to organisations to sell for charity and plantations in Canterbury also gave a large number. Patrols had been made by rangers of the department but these had not deterred the thieves, he said.
