Mr Penrhy Manning left New Zealand in May, 1963. and travelled to Britain, where he and three other men purchased a mobile caravan in which they toured both Britain and the Continent. He had previously make a 10month visit to Britain in 1951 and 1952. The countries visited included Greece, Italy, France, Scandinavia, West and East Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain. He liked Italy best of all the countries he visited, and it was the one to which he would most like to return, mainly because of its many historical associations. He particularly liked Florence While in Britain Mr Manning taught at two secondary modern schools.

He also sang in the chorus during the Festival of London production of “Yeoman of the Guard” held at the Tower of London. This, he said, was an experience he valued for the work he did with professional performers and directors.
